THEIR PAST AND PRESENT, WITH VIEWS OF THEIR CLERGY AND CONGREGATIONS
By “ATTICUS”
In about 1870-2, these articles appeared in the Preston Guardian newspaper, being published as a weekly feature. Eventually they were also published in book form. "Atticus" was the pen name of writer Anthony Hewitson, born in Blackburn in 1836.
The articles describe the places of worship in the townships surrounding Preston, though not central Preston itself. The architecture is described, and the clergymen who preach have also been spoken to. Some history of the area is normally given, along with description of some interesting places and people along the way. Locals are mentioned, sometimes by name.
Some articles describe a single place of worship; others several. In some cases a single church is covered in more than one article. All denominations are described. The services are described in each case, with comments on the sermon, the singers and the musicians!
The scans come from the Gale Newspaper Archive, but the papers can also be found on the British Newspaper Archive and in FindMyPast's newspaper collection.
